Cyprus hosts the 29th International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama
The 29th International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama will take place from July 3 to August 8, 2026, in Cyprus. Organized by the Department of Contemporary Culture and the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute, the event will feature five productions from Cyprus, Spain, Latvia, and Greece. Performances will be held at the Ancient Theatre of Kourion in Limassol, the Ancient Odeon of Paphos, and the Makarios III Amphitheatre in Nicosia. The program includes 'The Trojan Women' by Euripides, 'Hecuba' by Euripides, 'Lysistrata' by Aristophanes, 'Seven Against Thebes' by Aeschylus, and 'Alcestis' by Euripides. These works explore themes of war, violence, and collective trauma through modern theatrical interpretations. Key participants include the International Festival of Classical Theatre of Merida, the Daugavpils Theatre, the National Theatre of Greece, the State Theatre of Northern Greece, and the Cypriot group Persona. The festival aims to promote theatrical education and cultural tourism while highlighting the enduring relevance of ancient drama. The opening production on July 3 and 4 at the Kourion Theatre features 'The Trojan Women' directed by Carlota Ferrer.
