European Parliament committee adopts report on healthcare workforce crisis

The Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament has voted to approve a report authored by MEP Loucas Fourlas concerning the crisis in the healthcare workforce. The report addresses critical issues including the improvement of wages, working conditions, and the mitigation of professional burnout. It emphasizes the need to reduce the rate of professionals leaving the sector and proposes incentives to encourage healthcare workers to remain in their home countries. Additionally, the document calls for support regarding the mental health of staff and the implementation of safe staffing levels in hospitals and health centers. The Cyprus Health Services Union (OYYK-SEK) officially welcomed the approval, noting that it reflects a necessary coordinated European response. Preparation for the report included a consultation session held on September 23 between Mr. Fourlas and the OYYK-SEK Nursing and Midwifery Committee, where industry-specific recommendations were submitted.
