Update on Tempi train accident trial and National Transparency Authority auditor case
The trial regarding the Tempi train accident will resume on June 16, focusing on legal arguments concerning the standing of the Hellenic Republic, the Panhellenic Union of Traction Personnel, and various Bar Associations. Prosecutors proposed rejecting the participation of the Hellenic Republic and the traction union regarding the charge of breach of duty, while suggesting the acceptance of Bar Associations regarding the charge of disrupting transportation safety. Defense attorneys representing the accused have requested the exclusion of these parties, citing potential future legal invalidities. Simultaneously, the Three-Member Misdemeanor Court has indefinitely postponed the trial of a National Transparency Authority auditor. This auditor faced charges of breach of duty related to a report on the execution of Contract 717, which concerns the signaling and remote control systems upgrade on the Athens-Thessaloniki-Promachonas line. The court followed the prosecutor's recommendation to wait for a final ruling from the European Public Prosecutor's Office regarding related ongoing investigations. While most victims' families' lawyers agreed with the postponement, some expressed disagreement and requested that the trial proceed.
