Death of a homeless woman and a senior citizen spark concerns about social welfare in Cyprus
Two recent tragic incidents have brought attention to the lack of social support systems in Cyprus. A homeless woman was found deceased on a bench outside a supermarket in Limassol while holding a food voucher she had received shortly before from actor Kostas Vihas. Simultaneously, a separate incident involved an elderly woman who was found dead in her home in Larnaca after her absence went unnoticed for a significant period. Dimos Antoniou, president of the Third Age Observatory, stated that these cases reflect a systemic failure to protect vulnerable and elderly populations. The Observatory has called for the immediate mapping of citizens aged 65 and over to provide better tracking and psychosocial support. Officials emphasized that current state strategies are inadequate, stressing that without a shift in social mentality and better local government intervention, such tragedies are likely to increase. The incidents have triggered a national discussion regarding the isolation of the elderly and the need for more robust community support networks.
