Court of Appeal suspends sentence for robbery and attempted robbery
The Nicosia Court of Appeal has suspended the remainder of a three-year prison sentence for a young man convicted of robbery and attempted robbery. The defendant, whose age is reported as 21 by some sources and 28 by others, committed four incidents involving a kitchen knife at kiosks in the Strovolos area between October 2024 and July 2025. He successfully stole 20 euros in one instance, which he subsequently returned, while the other three attempts were unsuccessful. Initially, the Nicosia District Court imposed concurrent sentences, including 2.5 years for each attempted robbery, 6 months for illegal weapon possession, and 3 years for the completed robbery. The appellant had already served approximately 11 months in prison. While the Court of Appeal rejected the argument that the sentences were excessive, it granted the appeal regarding suspension, citing his personal circumstances, lack of injury caused, and the desire to provide a second chance. The remainder of his sentence is now suspended for a period of three years.
