Violent unrest in Belfast following stabbing attack
On Monday, June 10, a 30-year-old Sudanese national named Hanti Alondid allegedly stabbed a 40-year-old man, identified as Steven Ogilby, in North Belfast. The victim suffered severe injuries to his face, back, and neck, resulting in the loss of his left eye. Following the attack, violent anti-immigration riots broke out in Belfast on Tuesday, involving masked protesters who set fire to vehicles, houses, and local infrastructure. Some residents were forced to flee their homes due to the arson attacks. Alondid appeared in court facing charges of attempted murder, possession of a sharp object, and making threats to an NHS worker, with the judge denying bail until the next hearing on July 8. The victim’s family has issued a public appeal for calm and peaceful protest, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence as unacceptable. The UK media regulator, Ofcom, has warned social media platforms regarding the spread of content related to these disturbances.
