Public works department to review Limassol traffic infrastructure after public backlash
The Cyprus Department of Public Works has announced a review of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) projects in Limassol following public backlash regarding the installation of plastic bollards and changes to bike lanes. Mayor Yiannis Armeftis has formally requested an immediate suspension of work and a re-evaluation of traffic arrangements. Residents in areas such as Theklas Lysiotou and Emmanuel Roidis streets have voiced concerns over reduced parking accessibility and lack of prior consultation. While the Department of Public Works maintains that extensive consultations occurred during the 2022-2023 design phase, it has agreed to hold an urgent meeting with the Mayor and Municipal Council. The project aims to reduce private car usage from 90-95% to 75% within a decade, while promoting public transport and cycling. A dedicated information campaign is expected to launch soon to clarify the benefits of these improvements. The municipality has submitted 10 specific requests, including the potential removal or modification of existing bollards to ensure better urban functionality. The Department and the city authorities are now seeking a consensus that balances safety, mobility, and aesthetics.
