Escalation of hostilities between the US and Iran follows regional strikes

Following the downing of a US Apache helicopter on Tuesday, the United States conducted strikes against Iranian air defense, surveillance, and ground control sites near the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command stated the mission, which lasted approximately four hours, was a proportional response to Iranian aggression. In retaliation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles and drones against US military assets in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan. Iranian media claimed the destruction of multiple fighter jets and facilities at the Muwaffaq Salti Airbase in Jordan, though these reports remain unverified. Conversely, US officials reported that initial assessments showed most projectiles were intercepted with no significant damage to US personnel or infrastructure. Jordan’s armed forces confirmed they intercepted five incoming missiles. Additionally, local reports indicated strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, including Qeshm island and the port of Sirik. The ongoing violence has severely strained the ceasefire agreement established in April and caused a roughly 1% increase in global oil prices.
