Ebola outbreak spreads in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has resulted in 837 confirmed cases and 196 deaths, according to recent government reports. The rare Bundibugyo strain is currently affecting three provinces, including North Kivu and Ituri. Health organizations warn that the epidemic has not yet reached its peak and may persist for another year. Operations have been significantly hindered by security threats, attacks on medical personnel, and local resistance to hygiene measures. In a notable security incident, armed men abducted a woman and her six-year-old child, who had tested positive for the virus, from a health center near Butembo. Meanwhile, Ugandan Vice President Jessica Alupo has called for the lifting of travel restrictions on her citizens, asserting that Uganda has effectively contained the virus within its borders. International organizations, including the WHO, MSF, and the Red Cross, emphasize that the true extent of the virus remains difficult to track due to population mobility and inadequate diagnostic facilities.
