Cyprus tax authorities to conduct summer crackdown on tourist businesses

The Cyprus Tax Department has announced plans for extensive inspections of businesses in coastal tourist areas throughout July and August. This initiative is part of a broader tax reform framework that has been in effect since January 1. Officials will target businesses with high summer traffic, focusing on the mandatory issuance of receipts and the settlement of outstanding tax debts. Tax inspectors will operate by positioning themselves outside targeted premises to randomly check customers' receipts as they exit. If discrepancies are found, inspectors will enter the premises to cross-reference documentation with the collected receipts using specialized tablets. Businesses found to be in violation face temporary closure until they reach compliance. Specifically, closure may be mandated for businesses or individuals with tax debts exceeding €20,000 or those failing to issue legal receipts. Customers will not face any liability if a business fails to provide a receipt, as the legal burden rests entirely on the business owners.
