Democratic Rally criticizes government housing policy amid rising costs
The Democratic Rally (DISY) party recently issued a statement claiming that the housing crisis in Cyprus is worsening rather than improving. Citing Central Bank of Cyprus data for the fourth quarter of 2025, the party noted that the cost of housing increased by 7.1%, up from 5% in the previous quarter. Apartment prices rose by 9.6%, while house prices saw a 3.4% increase, with similar trends affecting rental costs. DISY argues that government measures have been insufficient and has reiterated previous proposals to address the shortage. Suggested interventions include faster licensing procedures, additional urban planning incentives, and specific support for young couples purchasing or renovating older properties. The party also advocates for the modernization of local plans and the development of isolated plots of land. In response, the Ministry of Interior stated that the housing issue has been a top government priority since day one, while acknowledging the significant challenges faced by citizens.
