Political dispute over housing crisis management in Cyprus

The Democratic Rally (DISY) party has criticized the Cypriot government’s housing measures as insufficient, citing a worsening crisis. According to the Central Bank of Cyprus, housing costs rose by 7.1% in the fourth quarter of 2025, up from 5% in the third quarter, with apartment prices surging by 9.6%. DISY argues that the government lacks technical documentation and demands the release of feasibility studies regarding supply and demand. The government, represented by the Ministry of Interior, maintains that it has implemented a comprehensive strategy over the past two years focused on increasing supply and supporting citizens. President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that the administration follows a concrete plan rather than slogans. Meanwhile, the opposition party AKEL criticized both the government and DISY, describing their exchange as a futile exercise that ignores the long-standing nature of the issue. DISY continues to propose measures such as expedited permitting, urban planning incentives, and support for home renovations.
