Cyprus health authorities warn of food delivery hygiene risks
Cyprus state health services have issued a warning regarding food safety risks associated with delivery services following a recent salmonella incident in Limassol where 70 people fell ill and 21 required hospitalization. Reports indicate a rise in consumer complaints about dirty, damaged, or poorly maintained motorcycle delivery boxes, which may lack proper sanitation for food transport. The Consumer Association attempted to inspect delivery equipment, but reported that few drivers consented to checks. Health authorities noted that the independent contractor status of many drivers creates legal challenges for oversight and inspection. Employers' groups, including OEB and KEVE, are being urged to implement stricter food safety protocols, such as regular equipment replacement and sanitation training. Authorities specifically cited instances of personal items being stored alongside food and insufficient protection against pests. Discussions are ongoing regarding additional mandatory measures to bridge the hygiene gap between restaurant kitchens and consumer delivery points.
