Supreme court rulings on former Metropolitan of Paphos Tychikos
On June 11, 2026, the Supreme Court of Cyprus rejected a petition filed by the former Metropolitan of Paphos, Tychikos, seeking to suspend the Holy Synod's decision to fill the Metropolitan throne and install a new Metropolitan, Gregorios. The court ruled that the Church of Cyprus is a private legal entity and its administrative decisions are not subject to state control. In a separate ruling on June 10, 2026, an appellate court partially granted Tychikos's appeal concerning his deposition. While the court upheld the dismissal of his challenge against the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus, it granted him an extension to file for a prerogative writ regarding the October 17, 2025, decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The court found that Tychikos had been unable to secure a copy of the Patriarchate's decision within the required 45-day deadline due to circumstances beyond his control. Tychikos was originally deposed on May 22, 2025, and suspended indefinitely on January 8, 2026. He continues to challenge the legality of these church sanctions through pending legal actions.
