Cyprus ministry discusses construction of new central prison facilities

Cyprus Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Phytiris, met with a delegation from the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) to advance the project of building new central prisons. The meeting was attended by the ministry’s General Director, George Panteli, as well as CEB representatives Sylvie Anagnostopoulos and Jerome Costanzo. Participants discussed the current state of the existing facilities, which officials state cannot meet modern requirements, and analyzed the needs of the correctional system. The meeting focused on the initial feasibility study and the definition of technical and operational requirements. The CEB is expected to play a critical role in providing technical guidance and expertise for the project's preparation. The Minister emphasized that the construction of new facilities is essential for modernizing infrastructure, improving detention conditions, and strengthening security. The project aims to address long-standing issues within the current system, including capacity concerns.
