DHKO leader meets with UN Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin
On Wednesday, the President of the Democratic Party (DHKO), Nikolas Papadopoulos, met with the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin. Papadopoulos reiterated his party's support for President Nikos Christodoulides' efforts to resume substantive negotiations on the Cyprus issue. He stated that any potential international conference must focus on the core aspects of the conflict rather than mere confidence-building measures. The DHKO leader reaffirmed that the only acceptable solution remains a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with single sovereignty, citizenship, and international personality. He explicitly rejected proposals regarding sovereign equality or a two-state solution, arguing they lead to partition. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to prevent the upgrading of the self-declared state in the north through direct trade, flights, or diplomatic contacts. Finally, he called for greater involvement from the European Union, noting that the Cyprus problem affects a member state of the EU.
