Court rejects environmental challenge regarding Pentakomo port

The Administrative Court has rejected a lawsuit filed by BirdLife Cyprus and Friends of the Earth Cyprus against the urban planning permit for the construction of a port in Pentakomo. The court ruled that the appeal was submitted past the legal deadline. Consequently, the court did not evaluate the environmental concerns raised by the organizations, which argued that the project poses a risk of irreversible ecological damage. The hearing for the case concluded in early September 2025 following a fast-track procedure. Previously, in May 2025, an interim injunction to suspend construction works was also canceled by the court. Melpo Apostolidou, Director of BirdLife Cyprus, expressed dissatisfaction that the nine-month judicial process did not address whether the project complies with environmental legislation. The organizations maintain that the environmental impact of the large-scale project remains unexamined and unresolved.
