Cypriot defense minister addresses security concerns regarding family members of terror suspects
Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas has called for public restraint following reports that the children of a terror suspect are serving in the National Guard. Authorities in Cyprus and Greece are currently investigating an alleged Hamas-linked network, which recently led to the arrest of a 37-year-old Palestinian in Crete and the detention of four individuals in Cyprus. One of the detainees in Cyprus is a naturalized citizen of Palestinian origin whose children serve as a police officer and contract soldiers (SYOP) in the military. Minister Palmas confirmed that internal checks have been conducted and no evidence suggests these individuals are linked to the criminal activities of their relative. He emphasized that the children have fulfilled all service requirements and should not face discrimination based on allegations against their father. While some public discourse has questioned the security implications of this situation, the government maintains that there is no operational risk. The minister stressed that guilt is individual and personal data must be protected throughout the legal process.
