Akel opposes increase in beach equipment rental fees in Cyprus
The political party AKEL has formally expressed its opposition to the recent decision by the Central Beach Committee to increase rental fees for beach equipment. Under the new pricing structure, the cost is set at 3.50 euros per sunbed and 3 euros per umbrella, totaling 10 euros for a standard set of two sunbeds and one umbrella. AKEL argues that this measure places an additional financial burden on households already struggling with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. The party claims that the increase is a direct consequence of the Christodoulides government's failure to adjust state subsidies for local municipalities, which currently face rising operational costs. According to the party, the government is passing its own budgetary shortcomings onto the public. AKEL maintains that access to beaches should be an affordable right for all citizens and visitors. They have called upon the government to assume responsibility and support local authorities without further taxing the public.
