European Commission introduces new strategies for island and coastal regions
On Wednesday, European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis and Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto unveiled the European Union's inaugural strategies for island and coastal regions in Brussels. The strategies address the unique needs of these areas, which include 95 million residents across 22 member states. Coastal zones generate approximately 265 billion euros in annual gross value added but face significant challenges, including climate change, pollution, tourism imbalances, and demographic decline. Commissioner Kadis emphasized that coastal development requires localized solutions rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. These strategies were developed as part of the European Ocean Pact and will be officially presented on June 26 in Paphos, in cooperation with the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. The regions serve as critical hubs for maritime trade, energy, fishing, and border security.
