Five police officers killed in Michoacan, Mexico

On Wednesday, an armed attack in the municipality of Nahuatzen, Michoacan state, resulted in the deaths of five police officers and left five others injured. According to the Michoacan Ministry of Security, the police vehicle was targeted by gunfire in an area known for the presence of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The state is a significant economic hub for avocado and citrus production, as well as a key location for Pacific coast trade. Local authorities have launched a wide-scale operation to locate and arrest the perpetrators. This incident occurs amid ongoing security concerns in the region, which has seen previous high-profile violence, including the November assassination of the mayor of Uruapan. Approximately 12,000 military personnel have been deployed in the state to address criminal activities such as extortion and drug trafficking. The violence coincides with the national anticipation of the FIFA World Cup, which is hosted in cities including Mexico City and Guadalajara.
