Greek Cypriot firefighter detained in Pyla buffer zone and later released

On June 11, 2026, a Greek Cypriot firefighter was detained by Turkish Cypriot authorities in the UN-controlled buffer zone of Pyla. The firefighter had entered the area accompanied by UN police to inspect the site for vegetation clearing ahead of the summer fire season. During the inspection, Turkish Cypriot police stopped the UN escort and took the firefighter into custody, transferring him to the village of Pergamos. Reports indicate that the Turkish Cypriot police were stationed within the buffer zone at the time of the incident. UNFICYP confirmed the occurrence and stated that investigations into the circumstances were underway. Later that afternoon, it was announced that the firefighter had been released. According to some reports, authorities released him after receiving explanations that he had entered the Pergamos area unintentionally during his official duties.
