Snakes spotted on a beach in Protaras
On Friday, social media posts featured a video of two non-venomous snakes at a rocky, unorganized coastal area in Protaras, Cyprus. The snakes, identified as Caspian whip snakes, locally known as 'therko' or 'pervolaris,' were observed near beachgoers, causing local discussion about safety and wildlife encounters. The Paralimni-Deryneia Municipality issued a formal statement expressing concern over reports that created unnecessary alarm. Officials clarified that the location was a natural, non-organized area lacking public facilities like sunbeds. Experts state that this species is harmless to humans, though it can bite if threatened. These reptiles are native to the area and play a beneficial role in the ecosystem by controlling rodent populations. The public is advised not to panic and to maintain a respectful distance from local wildlife.
