Ongoing trial in Buenos Aires regarding the death of Diego Maradona
The trial investigating the death of football legend Diego Maradona is currently underway in Buenos Aires. Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, due to acute heart failure and pulmonary edema while recovering at a home in Tigre. Seven healthcare professionals, including doctors, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and nurses, are charged with 'homicide with eventual malice,' a charge involving professional negligence that could lead to 25-year prison sentences. During recent proceedings, nursing coordinator Mariano Peroni testified for three hours, stating he never had physical access to the patient's home and did not know his personal staff. Concurrently, Dalma Maradona, the athlete's daughter, testified and accused the medical team led by neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque of negligence. She alleged that promised medical support, such as a 24/7 ambulance and proper equipment, was never provided. While Peroni maintains he could not have foreseen the outcome, family members argue that the lack of promised care was the primary cause of the fatal incident.
