First phase of Pedieos River restoration project completed in Nicosia

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cyprus announced the completion of the first phase of the Pedieos River/Kanli Dere Restoration Project. This 1.2-kilometer section links the Ledra Palace crossing area to the river corridor and features a two-way cycle lane, a footpath, and a green belt. The project is funded by the European Union through the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community. Representatives from the EU and UNDP, along with community groups and residents, marked the completion with walking and cycling activities. The initiative aims to restore natural habitats and foster community interaction in Nicosia. Authorities project that the 3.7-kilometer linear park will eventually attract at least 250,000 visitors annually. While UNDP stated that phase two is expected to begin in September 2026, other reports mentioned a start date as early as September of this year. The project is part of a broader effort to improve sustainable mobility and environmental protection across the divided capital.
