Recent fire incidents and electrical safety warnings in Cyprus
Over the weekend of June 20-22, 2026, Cyprus authorities responded to several fire incidents across the Larnaca and Paphos districts. On June 20, a fire caused by illegal waste burning at Melissia, Kalo Chorio, destroyed two donums of dry grass. On the same day, another fire affected a small area of wild vegetation near Pegeia. A more significant blaze on June 21 between Alaminos and Kofinou burned six hectares of vegetation and hay bales, requiring overnight surveillance to prevent flare-ups. On June 22, a small fire was extinguished in Sia. Separately, an electrical fire at a house in the Larnaca district was traced back to unauthorized photovoltaic batteries, leading the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) to issue strict warnings about mandatory safety certifications for solar energy storage systems. Officials emphasized that unauthorized modifications can lead to property loss and system disconnection.
