Recent fire incidents and industrial safety concerns across Cyprus
Cyprus experienced several fire incidents on July 1, 2026, including a grass fire near Palodeia on the Limassol-Platres road and a forest fire in Sias, Nicosia. The Palodeia fire burned 0.5 hectares and is linked by police to hot work, specifically the use of a grinder. In Sias, a 3-decari fire was caused by a domestic oven, with the offender facing legal action. A separate forest fire in Drouseia, Paphos, occurred early in the morning, burning 5 decari of crops and vegetation. Firefighting capabilities have been enhanced with new 24-hour rural stations in Pachna, Kelokedara, Lefkara, Peristerona, and Xylophagou. Additionally, investigations continue regarding a major factory fire in Aradippou that occurred earlier on June 29. Concerns have been raised by local mayors regarding the proximity of industrial and residential zones following the Aradippou incident. The Forestry Department has reiterated strict warnings against using heat-producing tools in open areas during the fire danger season.
