Fire department launches inspections along the buffer zone

On Friday, the Fire Department of Cyprus announced a new inspection campaign along the UN-administered buffer zone. The initiative follows a recent wildfire in the Nicosia district that posed a significant threat to nearby residences and properties. Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis stated that the goal is to identify vulnerable points, such as areas with accumulated waste or unmaintained vegetation, which could facilitate the spread of fires. Authorities are coordinating with state agencies to ensure these areas are cleaned and cleared of brush. The campaign aims to prevent future incidents where fires originating in the northern occupied territories cross into the southern government-controlled areas. Similar inspections are being conducted across all communities nationwide to mitigate fire risks during the summer season. The department is also working to inform local authorities and communities adjacent to the buffer zone about necessary preventative measures. The primary objective is the protection of homes and structures from fires expanding across the border.
