India protests US naval actions against tankers near Oman

On June 11, 2026, the Indian government summoned the US charge d'affaires in New Delhi to protest three separate US naval attacks on vessels carrying Indian crews off the coast of Oman. The US military, enforcing a blockade of Iranian oil exports in the Strait of Hormuz since April 13, stated that the targeted ships were violating sanctions by attempting to transport Iranian oil. The three vessels identified as Settebello, Marivex, and Jalveer were flagged to Palau and Guinea-Bissau. According to Indian authorities, the attacks resulted in the deaths of three sailors on the Settebello, while 21 others were rescued. Regarding the MT Jalveer, which caught fire, the Indian Ministry of Shipping reported all 20 crew members were safe. Indian spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called for an immediate end to these actions, while the US Central Command justifies the operations as necessary to maintain the maritime blockade. Rescue efforts for the crews have been ongoing since the incidents began earlier in the week.
