EU Pact on Migration and Asylum officially enters into force

The European Union’s Pact on Migration and Asylum officially entered into force on Friday following an informal ministerial conference held at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia. Deputy Migration Minister of Cyprus Nicholas Ioannides stated that this transition marks the shift from years of negotiation to practical implementation. The framework is intended to create a common strategy for managing migration across the bloc. European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner confirmed that the pact provides the first comprehensive set of rules for the union. Officials noted a significant decline in irregular migration, citing a 55 per cent drop over two years, a 90 per cent reduction on the Western Balkans route, and a 67 per cent decrease on the route from Turkey to Greek islands in early 2026. While officials expressed optimism, they acknowledged that the implementation phase presents ongoing challenges requiring adaptability and cooperation between member states. The project was identified as a key priority during the Cyprus presidency of the EU Council.
