US states launch inquiry into OpenAI over safety and user data

A coalition of US states, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, has requested information from OpenAI regarding its ChatGPT application. The inquiry focuses on user data practices, with specific concerns regarding the protection of minors and elderly users. OpenAI stated it is taking these concerns seriously and intends to cooperate fully while emphasizing recent security enhancements. This development follows a lawsuit filed in early June by the Florida Attorney General against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman for allegedly endangering young users. Additionally, families of adolescents have initiated legal action against AI companies in cases involving suicide. In January, Google and Character.AI reached out-of-court settlements regarding similar liability claims. This formal inquiry follows an earlier letter sent in December by attorneys general from 42 states.
