Greek doctors increasingly migrating to Cyprus for GeSY health system

According to reports by the newspaper Ta Nea, approximately 860 doctors from Greece are currently working within the Cypriot General Healthcare System (GeSY). This figure accounts for nearly one in four of the total 3,400 physicians employed in the system. The demographic shift is particularly notable in specific medical fields, with approximately 40% of cardiologists and 30% of general practitioners in GeSY hailing from Greece. Cypriot Health Minister Neofytos Charalambidis stated that the influx is driven by the system's appeal to both patients and medical professionals. The minister highlighted that the system's attractiveness stems from universal access, the ability for patients to choose their personal doctor, and the integration of the public and private sectors. Furthermore, the digitalization of processes and upgraded infrastructure are cited as key factors for this migration. While the report indicates that financial motivations are a primary driver for these doctors, the ministry emphasizes the systemic benefits provided by the framework.
