18-month-old infant dies in Heraklion, Crete

On the evening of Friday, June 12, an 18-month-old girl of Roma descent died at the University Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) in Crete. The child, who had been unwell for several days, had been examined by a pediatrician a few days prior and was under prescribed treatment. Her health condition deteriorated, prompting her 45-year-old grandfather, who was caring for her while her parents worked off the island, to transport her to the hospital. Upon arrival, medical staff identified symptoms of sepsis. Despite 48 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts, the child went into cardiac arrest and passed away. Following the incident, the public prosecutor ordered the arrest of the grandfather on charges of child exposure. This measure is intended to facilitate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the infant's care and death.
