Cyprus presents new national blood strategy
On Saturday, Cypriot Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides presented the National Blood Strategy during a workshop in Nicosia, held to mark World Voluntary Blood Donor Day. The strategy aims to reform the national blood system by focusing on patient safety, blood quality, and the protection of both donors and recipients. Minister Charalambides highlighted that the initiative is designed to address Cyprus' specific transfusion needs, noting the country's high prevalence of patients with thalassemia and sickle cell disease. Key operational improvements proposed include enhanced monitoring of blood stocks, better inter-service coordination, and the integration of modern medical technology. The ministry plans to review the strategy before proceeding with its official implementation, which will be guided by clinical evidence and patient requirements. The government official emphasized that the system relies on long-standing voluntary, unpaid blood donation practices. Future success is contingent upon active collaboration between the health ministry, medical professionals, blood banks, and various patient advocacy groups.
