Fatal shooting of a man in Exarcheia
On the evening of Saturday, June 13, a man was found dead on the steps at the intersection of Kallidromiou and Emmanouil Benaki streets in the Exarcheia district of Athens. Police recovered five 9mm shell casings at the scene, noting the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Reports regarding the victim's identity are inconsistent: some sources describe him as a 25-year-old Turkish national who arrived in Greece in 2024 and had applied for asylum, while others report him as a 35-year-old of potential Arab descent. According to some reports, the victim had a significant criminal record in Turkey, though he had no major prior police records in Greece beyond two routine detentions. Authorities are currently investigating the incident as a probable settling of accounts related to drug trafficking. The Organized Crime Division has taken over the investigation to determine if the victim was being pursued by criminal associates. No other individuals are believed to have been involved in the immediate attack.
