Farmers protest cabinet water allocation decision
The Cyprus cabinet recently authorized the release of 3.5 million cubic metres of water for irrigation to address severe shortages. Under the plan, 2 million cubic metres were allocated to the Paphos irrigation project, while 1.5 million cubic metres were directed to the southern conveyor system. Farmers from Larnaca and Famagusta have expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that the allocation creates regional inequality and disadvantages areas served by the southern conveyor system. Representatives from agricultural organizations, including the secretary-general of the pan-agricultural association Tasos Yiapanis, warn that existing supplies for olive groves and fruit orchards are nearing exhaustion. Producers in the Kokkinochoria region specifically fear that potato crops may not survive the season due to water uncertainty. Farmers have announced plans to confront the Ministry of Agriculture on Monday to address their concerns regarding potential crop losses and rising production costs. The sector maintains that the current reserves are insufficient to sustain output through the remainder of the summer.
