Cyprus outlines diplomatic strategy for Central Asia

Following a regional tour, Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos announced that the government has mapped out future diplomatic steps for Central Asia. The region, which includes Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, is considered a priority for protecting national interests. Kombos noted that these countries are generally perceived as being within Turkey’s sphere of influence, necessitating a cautious diplomatic approach to foster dialogue. The Minister emphasized the need to build communication channels to mitigate potential problems. Relations with Kazakhstan are currently being used as a reference point for future engagement with other states in the area. Recent developments in Kazakhstan, such as the exchange of diplomatic missions and the start of direct flights, demonstrate the progress achieved so far. Kombos stated that Cyprus aims to maintain active engagement in the region without being deterred by the complexity of the tasks involved.
