United Nations envoy Maria Angela Holguin meets with Cypriot political parties
Maria Angela Holguin, the United Nations envoy tasked with the Cyprus issue, recently held meetings with representatives from several parliamentary political parties, including DISY, AKEL, DIKO, and AlMa. However, the ELAM party was excluded from this consultation process. Some domestic critics argue that since ELAM is the third-largest party in Cyprus based on recent electoral results, this exclusion requires an official explanation from the United Nations. Critics further suggested that if the exclusion is based on ELAM's opposition to the Bizonal Bicommunal Federation (BBF) model, then logically the envoy should also reconsider meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. This argument is based on the premise that Turkey also no longer officially supports the BBF model, favoring a two-state solution instead. To date, the United Nations has not provided a formal explanation regarding the selection criteria for these political meetings.
