Cyprus defense minister attends Eurosatory 2026 and clarifies military deployment status
Cypriot Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas is traveling to Paris to inaugurate the Cyprus pavilion at the Eurosatory 2026 defense exhibition. During the event, he will engage in bilateral meetings, including discussions with the Brazilian Deputy Defense Minister. Regarding domestic security, Palmas addressed media reports suggesting a permanent deployment of Greek F-16 fighter jets and the frigate Elli in Cyprus. He stated that the current Greek military presence remains temporary and was initiated following a drone attack on the British base at Akrotiri in March 2026. The minister emphasized that no decisions on long-term or permanent stationing of these assets have been made, though the situation is assessed daily. Additionally, Palmas clarified that the recently signed Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with France does not establish a permanent French military base in Cyprus. He also planned to sign an agreement with the European Space Agency for the exchange and mutual protection of classified information.
