Customs authorities seize undeclared tobacco in Paphos and Ayios Dometios
On June 13, 2026, Cyprus Customs authorities seized large quantities of undeclared tobacco products in two separate incidents. At Paphos Airport, two Spanish nationals travelling to Manchester were intercepted with a combined total of 48 kg of rolling tobacco, lacking required health warnings and traceability codes. The first passenger was released after paying an €8,000 out-of-court settlement. The second passenger was brought before the Paphos District Court for a detention order. Simultaneously, at the Ayios Dometios crossing point, a Turkish Cypriot individual with a British passport was detained for attempting to smuggle 200 packets of cigarettes into the government-controlled areas. The cigarettes were concealed within a baby stroller and bags. The individual was subsequently released following an out-of-court settlement payment of €1,200. All seized products were confiscated by the Department of Customs.
