Customs authorities seize large quantities of illegal tobacco products

On June 13, 2026, customs officers at Paphos Airport and the Ayios Dometios crossing point intercepted two separate smuggling attempts. At Paphos Airport, two Spanish nationals were found carrying large quantities of rolling tobacco intended for transport to Manchester. The first passenger was caught with 469 packets (23.45 kg) and was released after paying an €8,000 out-of-court settlement. The second passenger was found with 491 packets (24.55 kg) and was brought before the Paphos District Court for a remand order. Separately, at the Ayios Dometios crossing, customs officers discovered 200 cigarette packets hidden in personal belongings and a pushchair carried by a couple traveling on foot. A British passport holder involved in this incident was arrested and later released following an €1,200 settlement. All confiscated tobacco lacked required health warnings and traceability markings. Authorities have confirmed that investigations into both cases remain ongoing.
