Earthquake reported near Methoni on Sunday evening

On the evening of Sunday, June 14, an earthquake occurred in the sea south of Methoni. The Geodynamic Institute of Athens reported varying measurements regarding the event. The revised data places the epicenter 18 km south-southwest of Methoni at a focal depth of 9 km, with a magnitude of 5.1. Initial reports and some sources suggested a magnitude of 5.3 with an epicenter 15 km south of Methoni at a depth of 10 km. The tremors were reportedly felt in Patras, Kalamata, and other areas of Messinia, as well as slightly in Attica. Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos noted that the region has high seismic potential and recalled a major 6.6 magnitude earthquake in the same area on February 14, 2008. Experts state it is currently too early to determine if this event represents the main seismic activity.
