Cyprus to install energy storage systems to stabilize electricity grid
The Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) has announced the commencement of a 50 million euro project to install three energy storage facilities. According to TSO head Stavros Stavrinos, initial meetings with the contractor are scheduled for June. The project, awarded following an international tender, aims to stabilize the power grid, reduce curtailments of renewable energy sources, and increase their penetration into the system. Under CERA decision 217/2025, two facilities will feature a capacity of 40 MW/160 MWh each, while the third will have a capacity of 40 MW/80 MWh with additional grid-forming capabilities. The total cost will be paid in installments over a ten-year period. These installations are positioned at strategic locations within the Transmission System.
