Third Age Observatory highlights rise in elder abuse on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

On the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Third Age Observatory issued a statement calling for stronger legal and institutional protections for the elderly. Citing World Health Organisation data, the organization noted that one in six people over the age of 60 globally experiences some form of mistreatment. Abuse is defined as encompassing physical, verbal, and psychological violence, as well as financial exploitation, sexual abuse, and social neglect. The observatory reported that most incidents occur within private homes, often involving family members, caregivers, or domestic workers, though cases are also documented in care facilities. Victims frequently fail to report abuse due to financial or emotional dependency, fear of retaliation, and skepticism regarding the effectiveness of formal complaints. Warning signs identified by the group include unexplained physical injuries, sudden behavioral changes, or social withdrawal. The organization criticized the state for long-term inaction and institutional shortcomings. Recommended measures include increased facility inspections, improved legal protections, awareness campaigns, and the establishment of dedicated shelters.
