US-mediated talks continue as tensions remain high in the Middle East
The fifth round of talks between Israel and Lebanon, facilitated by the United States, continued in Washington on Friday after a planned conclusion on Thursday. Despite the diplomatic efforts, Hezbollah reported a fatal drone strike that killed at least three people, which Israel described as an attack on militants. Israeli government spokesperson David Menser stated that Israeli forces would not withdraw from southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed and demilitarized. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran is making major concessions in separate negotiations, which are expected to continue next week. Separately, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Omani officials clarified that there will be no transit fees imposed on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had previously been linked to potential fee implementation plans, but the US remains firmly opposed to such charges, citing risks of chaos. Trump also emphasized that the US has not released Iranian funds to the country directly, but rather intends to manage them for agricultural purchases.
