Republic of Cyprus donates 380,000 euros to the Committee on Missing Persons
On Monday, Presidential Commissioner Marios Hartsiotis and UNDP head Jakhongir Khaydarov signed an agreement for a 380,000 euro contribution from the Republic of Cyprus to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP). This funding is designated for CMP operations throughout 2026, aimed at the location, exhumation, identification, and return of remains to families. Since 2005, the Republic of Cyprus has donated a total of 4,772,700 euros to the committee. Established in 1981 under UN auspices, the CMP is a bicommunal body tasked with investigating cases from intercommunal conflicts. Data indicates that of the 2,002 individuals officially missing, 1,069 have been identified to date, including 764 Greek Cypriots and 305 Turkish Cypriots. The CMP continues to rely on international and national donors, with the European Union being its primary financial supporter. Last year, the remains of 23 individuals were found, 12 of whom have been successfully identified. The Presidential Commissioner reaffirmed the government's commitment to continue supporting the committee's work until every missing person is identified.
