Appellate court orders detention of three defendants in family abuse case

On June 10, the Appellate Court overturned a prior decision by the Famagusta District Court that had granted conditional release to three defendants, specifically a father and his two sons. The defendants are facing 122 criminal charges related to the alleged abuse of children within their own family, covering the period from 2013 to May 2026. Allegations presented in court include physical assault, child mistreatment, threats, psychological harm, and attempted sexual abuse. Furthermore, investigators reported substandard living conditions, including deprivation of food, confinement, and bans on leaving the home. The Attorney General had filed appeals against the initial bail conditions, which included financial bonds and reporting requirements. The Appellate Court ruled that there was sufficient prima facie evidence to justify the detention of the suspects until their trial, which is scheduled for July 16. The ruling effectively revokes the previous bail order that had restricted the defendants from contacting the complainants or leaving the country.
