DISY President Annita Demetriou seeks EPP support for Cyprus settlement

Democratic Rally (DISY) President Annita Demetriou is attending the European People's Party (EPP) Leaders' Summit in Brussels to advocate for a more active European Union role in the Cyprus issue. Through an official letter addressed to EPP President Manfred Weber and party leaders, she expressed support for the ongoing diplomatic efforts led by UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin. Specifically, Demetriou is pushing for the appointment of a new EU special envoy for Cyprus to maintain institutional continuity following the departure of Johannes Hahn. She also requested that the EPP exert pressure on Turkey to abandon its advocacy for a two-state solution, which is rejected by the Republic of Cyprus and the international community. Demetriou emphasized that progress in EU-Turkey relations should be contingent upon meaningful advancements in the Cyprus negotiations. The current focus remains on the potential for a new informal 5+1 meeting format. She also reaffirmed the party's commitment to finding a resolution strictly based on UN Security Council resolutions and EU principles.
