DISY president writes to EPP regarding Cyprus problem negotiations
The President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Annita Demetriou, has sent an official letter to European People's Party (EPP) President Manfred Weber and all EPP leaders requesting increased European support for the Cyprus problem. Demetriou emphasized the importance of ongoing United Nations initiatives, specifically the efforts of Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin, aimed at convening a 5+1 format meeting. The DISY leader requested that the EPP provide political backing to the UN-led process and support the appointment of a new EU special representative for Cyprus. This appointment is sought to ensure continuous European engagement following the resignation of former Commissioner Johannes Hahn from the role. In her letter, she reiterated the party's rejection of Turkey’s two-state solution proposal, aligning with UN Security Council resolutions and EU values. She warned that despite recent mobility, progress remains fragile due to significant political differences between the involved parties. Demetriou expressed gratitude to the EPP for its long-standing support regarding the reunification of Cyprus.
