EPP supports Cyprus peace efforts and active EU involvement
The European People's Party (EPP) has adopted a proposal from the Democratic Rally (DISY) stating that European security architecture remains incomplete while the Turkish occupation of Cyprus persists. During an EPP leaders' summit, DISY President Annita Demetriou formally requested increased EU engagement, including the appointment of an EU envoy to facilitate talks. The EPP reaffirmed its support for a Cyprus solution based on United Nations Security Council resolutions and adherence to EU legal principles. Demetriou emphasized the need to reject the Turkish proposal for a two-state solution, noting its incompatibility with international law. The summit also addressed broader defense concerns, with leaders calling for the strengthening of European defense within NATO and the activation of Article 42(7) of the EU Treaty. Demetriou previously sent a formal letter to EPP President Manfred Weber advocating for continued diplomatic support in the context of ongoing UN-led '5+1' efforts. This alignment aims to maintain pressure on Turkey, linking progress in EU-Turkey relations to tangible developments on the Cyprus issue.
